From Rock Bottom to Riding High: Jack Mills’ Horse Ride to Raise Awareness for Men’s Mental Health

Jack Mills has successfully raised over £1300 on his sponsored horse ride to Bushey Fields Hospital, supporting men’s mental health awareness. Jack, who is currently receiving outpatient care at the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is eager to give back to the place that has supported him through his own mental health struggles.

The funds raised by Jack’s ride will go towards improving the hospital’s garden, which Jack feels is in need of attention. "Whilst there is a small bit of green space, there’s still a lot of concrete," Jack explains. "I want it to be somewhere people can actually sit and feel at ease. Somewhere that helps people when they’re feeling low."

Jack’s connection to Bushey Fields is deeply personal. Eighteen months ago, he was grappling with severe anxiety and felt he had reached rock bottom. Thanks to the compassionate support from the hospital, particularly Dr Pegg and her team,

Jack began to see hope. "Without their help, I honestly don’t think I’d be here today," Jack says. "They helped me through a time in my life when I didn’t think I had many options left."

Jack’s horse, George accompanied him on this special ride. George has been a consistent source of strength for Jack during his recovery, motivating him to push forward even on his hardest days.

"There were mornings I didn’t want to get out of bed, but George was always there waiting for me. That’s why it feels right to do this with him," Jack adds.

This ride is not only about raising funds - it’s also about starting conversations. Jack is passionate about encouraging men to speak openly about their mental health.

"I know how hard it is to open up," Jack says. "A lot of men feel like they can’t talk about what they’re going through. But I want them to know it’s OK to ask for help. It could save your life, just like it saved mine."

He’s also considering how he can continue supporting the Trust and raising mental health awareness after the ride. "This isn’t just a one-time thing for me," he says. "I want to keep helping in any way I can."

Jack’s message to others is clear: "If you’re struggling, reach out. The help is there. Bushey Fields helped me, and they can help you too."

Donations can still be made through Jack’s fundraising page.
