Research and Innovation
The Research and Innovation (R&I) team are responsible for the management and delivery of research studies across the Trust.
We set-up and deliver studies across the 4 disciplines (Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, CAMHS and Dementia) as well as staff studies and Urgent Public Health.
We enable patients, carers and staff to have the opportunity and choice to access research (as part of their standard care). Research allows services to move forward and ensure that the needs of people within the region are met through evidence-based practice.

Spiritual Care Team / Chaplaincy
Our service is for anyone who is receiving support from one of the teams or services in the Trust whether as an inpatient or in the community and their carers. We can also provide informal listening support to staff.
How can we help?
The spiritual part of someone’s life can be an aid towards recovery and a comfort and strength in times of stress and anxiety. Ensuring that people can draw on this spirituality is an essential part of helping someone towards better well-being. We know not all people express their spirituality or beliefs through a particular faith or religion. With this in mind, we make sure our support is for people of all faiths and beliefs and we aim to work in an inclusive, responsive and affirming way with each person we meet.
One of the main ways we offer spiritual care is through 1-to-1 sessions. These can involve someone talking to us about their life, beliefs, and values, and might touch on psychological and social, as well as religious or spiritual themes. We also run group sessions, often in partnership with other healthcare professionals, where people can explore their spirituality.
As well as running these groups, we make sure that people have the opportunities and the places to practice their faith or reflect on their beliefs. There are prayer/quiet rooms on each main Trust site where people can reflect and find peace. We organise events to celebrate certain religious and cultural festivals. We raise awareness of the benefits of spirituality and spiritual healthcare among staff members, so that they are able to better understand someone’s spiritual needs. We also maintain links with local faith communities and use them as a resource when needed.
Carers can also get in touch with us if they want to find spiritual support for their role as a carer.
We can also provide informal listening support to staff.
The Team
Our Team of chaplains cover the whole Trust. Each member of the team is from a different faith or spiritual tradition including Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and the Christian traditions of Church of England, Free Church, Orthodox and Roman Catholic. Although we come from these different backgrounds, we are respectful of the different faiths and beliefs we encounter.
How do I refer?
Someone can refer themselves simply by ringing or emailing the team or by asking a staff member to get in touch with us on their behalf.

Within the Trust we have a variety of staff networks includng ENRICH, Your disABILITY, and LGBTQ+.
The purpose of our staff networks is to bring together staff who are under-represented or disadvantaged - firstly to create a safe space for those who may have concerns or issues to raise, or simply to have a regular conversation with like-minded people who are aiming for the same outcomes and changes within our organisation. Secondly, staff network meetings are an opportunity to highlight and address any issues and further work that can be done, so there is also a 'task and finish' element to our staff networks, where actions are decided and picked up by a variety of network members - usually incorporating lots of collaborative working.
You can find out more about each network in more detail by clicking on the links to the right, or if you have any questions or would like to learn more, please email bchft.staffnetworks@nhs.net. Please note: This email address is monitored by those involved in the running of all three networks.
To find out more, including information on how to become a member of a network, visit Staff Network section on the intranet.

Safeguarding is everyone's business.
Safeguarding means protecting a citizen’s health, wellbeing and human rights; enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. It is an integral part of providing high-quality health care. Safeguarding children, young people and adults is a collective responsibility.
Those most in need of protection include:
- Children and young people
- Adults at risk, such as those receiving care in their own home, people with physical, sensory and mental impairments, and those with learning disabilities.
The Trust is committed to safeguarding children and adults across the organisation. The welfare of the people who come into contact with our services either directly or indirectly is paramount and all our staff have a responsibility to ensure that best practice is followed, including compliance with statutory requirements.
You can find out more by visiting the Safeguarding pages on the intranet.
What is Speaking Up?
Speaking Up about any concerns you have at work is really important, it is also your right and responsibility, in fact, it’s vital because it will help us to keep improving our services for all patients and the working conditions for our staff.
You may feel worried about speaking up and raising a concern and we understand this but please don’t be put off.
Our Freedom to Speak Up Guardians
The Guardians are an independent and impartial source of advice for staff who will facilitate raising issues at the highest level in the Trust. The Guardians will also support a focus on safety, learning and proper handling of cases, and be an honest broker by monitoring separation of human resource issues from raising concerns under the freedom to speak up process.
We have two Freedom to Speak Up Guardians in the Trust. Please see their details below

What is Organisational Development?
It is a planned approach to help the organisation to remain healthy, effective and sustainable for the short and long term. It basically tries to ensure we have the right people, with the right skills, in the right place at the right time and if we haven’t then to help both individuals and teams to get there so we can meet the organisational objectives. It relies on working across the whole organisation (system) using the knowledge, skills, data and expertise of staff and stakeholders to co-produce solutions.
OD does not have all the answers but it can work with you to help explore and develop solutions. Its design is to challenge the norm and ensure continual improvement, not purely acceptance.
